The Metropolitan Knoxville Airport Authority (McGhee Tyson Airport) and the Arts & Culture Alliance of Greater Knoxville are pleased to present “Arts in the Airport”, a new exhibition featuring selected artwork from over 40 artists in the East Tennessee region. “Arts in the Airport” was developed to allow regional artists to compete and display work in the most visited site in the area. The selected art features contemporary 2- and 3-dimensional artwork and will be exhibited in the secured area behind McGhee Tyson Airport’s security gate checkpoint from April 21 – October 20, 2011 with an opening reception on Thursday, May 5, at 5:00 PM. Please note: the exhibition is normally available for viewing only by visitors flying in or out of the airport. Otherwise, artists and their guests may view the exhibition during the opening reception and by appointment with Metropolitan Knoxville Airport Authority staff. Contact Becky Huckaby, Director of Public Relations, at (865) 342-3014.

“This current selection is striking in the abundance of narrative images that engage the viewer through specific points of entry, whether a face, an object, a figure, or a path,” says juror Stephen Wicks, Curator at the Knoxville Museum of Art. “Photography is especially well represented, as are entries that reflect artists’ interest in exploring the expressive possibilities of non-traditional art materials such as tape, plastic, vinyl, leather, cardboard, and water. The fact that this selection includes quite a few works by artists who have never before participated in this exhibition is a healthy sign that bodes well for the future of the Art in the Airport program.”

“The Arts in the Airport program has been a tremendous success and we are looking forward to the opening of our newest exhibit featuring the talented work of East Tennessee artists,” said Kirk Huddleston, Chairman of the Metropolitan Knoxville Airport Authority’s Board of Commissioners. “This new exhibit is filled with amazing works in all areas of artist media and we believe that our passengers will be pleased with its beauty and craftsmanship.”

The following artists’ works will be shown:

Arts & Culture Alliance Presents Knoxville Symphony Orchestra 75th Anniversary Commemorative Exhibition

Sept. 10, 2010 – The Arts & Culture Alliance is pleased to present the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra 75th Anniversary Commemorative Exhibition, a new exhibition featuring selected artwork from artists throughout the East Tennessee region. The KSO, in partnership with the Alliance, developed this exhibition to display artwork inspired by the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra in celebration of its 75th Anniversary season (2010-2011). Earlier this year, the KSO invited artists to attend a private symphony rehearsal at the Tennessee Theatre; as a result, the exhibition includes many works created specifically in honor of the KSO’s 75th Anniversary. The selected art features both traditional and non-traditional work, and will be exhibited in the Balcony at the Emporium Center from October 1-29. An opening reception will take place as part of First Friday activities on October 1 from 5-9 p.m. featuring a string quartet of the KSO from 5-6:30 p.m. A brass quintet will perform just outside the Emporium from 5:30-6:30 p.m. as part of the Arts District Grand Opening Celebration along the 100 & 200 Blocks of Gay Street.

The juror, Carl Gombert, viewed submissions by more than 30 artists to select the show. Since 1993, Gombert has taught painting, drawing and art history at Maryville College. He has exhibited widely throughout the country and his art has won numerous awards. The following artists’ works will be shown:

Metropolitan Knoxville Airport Authority and Arts & Culture Alliance Present “Arts in the Airport”

April 5, 2010 – The Metropolitan Knoxville Airport Authority (McGhee Tyson Airport) and the Arts & Culture Alliance of Greater Knoxville are pleased to present “Arts in the Airport”, a new exhibition featuring selected artwork from 36 artists in Tennessee. “Arts in the Airport” was developed in the spring of 2009 to allow regional artists to compete and display work in the most visited site in the area. The selected art features contemporary 2-dimensionalartwork and will be exhibited in the secured area behind McGhee Tyson Airport’s security gate checkpoint from April 23 – October 21, 2010.

“I was pleased by the dramatic increase in artist submissions for this show, which made it especially competitive. As a result, the quality of the final selection promises to be the highest ever,” says juror Stephen Wicks, Curator of the Knoxville Museum of Art. Wicks viewed 815 submissions to select the show. “The generally forward-looking nature of the show and its diversity of styles, materials, and subjects speak of a cultural region that is complex, dynamic, and in touch with national and international art developments.”

“The artwork featured in this exhibition is a true reflection of our region and serves as an example of the artistic talent found in our community,” said Kirk Huddleston, Chairman of the Metropolitan Knoxville Airport Authority’s Board of Commissioners. “As we open the third airport exhibition, we are pleased to showcase another group of exceptional pieces.”

Award-winning Farragut artist, ‘workaholic,’ seeks gallery perch

Thursday, August 20, 2009 | Staff Reports | farragutpress

Award-winning artist and former farragutpress employee Julie Bernal has been a graphic designer in some form since she learned how to color inside the lines.

She has known since childhood that she wanted “to be somebody.” As winner of the People’s Choice Award at the Arts & Culture Alliance’s Top 40 Exhibition for her painting “Canoes – Still Water,” and a graphic designer for one of Knoxville’s premier public and media relations firms, Moxley Carmichael, she certainly achieved that. She also was Skirt! Knoxville’s “5 Things on My Life List” profile for August.

“I’m a workaholic. I set goals for myself, I always have,” Bernal said. “I’ve always had the goal to have one of my paintings in a gallery. When I started doing graphic design, I kind of stopped painting. I painted a lot in college and three or four years went by, and I didn’t paint at all.

“Last year, I started thinking about it again, and I still had this goal that I hadn’t achieved yet and I needed to achieve it!” she said of creating her award-winning painting.

Even as a child, Bernal understood that there were more places for art than just on white paper and in coloring books. Her earliest memory of utilizing graphic design was from when she was age 6 and working on an art project for Valentine’s Day.

“It was a collection of different cards,” Bernal said. “They were little hearts that I cut out in different shapes with all different sayings. Then I took it to another level and created a package for them out of construction paper and tape, and then I had plastic wrap for the cover.

“I made a bunch of them. My mom was like, ‘you should try selling them, you know, go around the neighborhood,’ and I did. My neighbors thought they were cute and were amused and bought some for around 25 cents.”

Art really didn’t take over her life, though, until she came to Farragut High School. She enrolled in FHS’s fine arts courses, and when she was a sophomore, one of her teachers encouraged her class to figure out what they wanted to do with their lives. When Bernal discovered graphic arts, she knew that was what she wanted to do.

She got a job at farragutpress as a graphic designer while eventually obtaining her degree at Pellissippi State Community College. A few months after graduation, she was promoted to head of production.

“I’m driven by deadlines, so I love that intense, fast pace. I thrive in that stressful environment,” she said. “I loved laying out the paper. It’s great, because it’s fitting together a puzzle, it’s challenging, it’s exciting and you never get bored with that. But I wanted to be able to do something that was a little bit more out of the box and that had more projects involved.”

That’s when she joined Moxley Carmichael’s graphic design team.

She does a little bit of everything, including designing Web sites, logos, brochures, annual reports and advertisements. She’s worked with clients such as Pilot, Premier Surgical and Knoxville Symphony Orchestra.

“My day is always busy,” she said with a smile. “You have anywhere from five to 15 projects that you have to work on. But they all have different deadlines, and you have to be able to manage them.”

Since achieving her goal of having her art publicly displayed, Bernal’s upping the ante. She has decided to create a collection of 15 large paintings, even though the idea of a larger canvas scared her. She wants to finish them by the end of August and hopefully show them in a solo exhibition and sell them.

“Anytime something scares me, that is when I want to tackle it.”
